Aberdeen Performing Arts is a multi-award winning, multi-site, arts charity right at the centre of North-east of Scotland. Our three iconic city centre venues; His Majesty’s Theatre, the Music Hall and the Lemon Tree, are all on a national and international touring circuit for the performing arts and a vital part of Aberdeen and Scotland’s cultural landscape.

We want everyone to be able to access and enjoy all that Aberdeen Performing Arts has to offer. We are committed to ensuring that our venues are accessible and to providing the best possible experience for all we welcome through our doors. We offer accessible performances across our programme. These include: Captioned Performances; British Sign Language; Audio Described Performances; and Relaxed Performances. We provide one free Essential Companion ticket for those who need someone to be with them in order to come to an event.
Nimbus operates the venues Access Registration Scheme on their behalf. The venue or event has their own Digital Access Pass. *The information in this listing is submitted by the provider*.
A free registration is available at this venue as an alternative to an Access Card. Please use the link below to begin your application. Access guidance
- Walking sticks, crutches and walking aids can be taken into our performance spaces. Any equipment that will not fit safely under the seats will be stored by staff during the performance and brought to you at the end. For events that are standing in the stalls, those with standing tickets who find it difficult to stand for long periods of time may access the unreserved seating area at the back of the auditorium in the Music Hall and Lemon Tree. A standard standing ticket will allow access to this seating.
- Wheelchair spaces can be pre-booked through the box office or online when you sign up to our Access Register. Just contact the box office to update your record. We have wheelchair access at all three of our city centre venues, including a newly installed sesame lift at the Music Hall
- HMT - If you have limited mobility and tickets for stalls seats you can enter by Donald’s Way. Access is available 30 minutes before the start of the performance. Use the buzzer to alert the front of house team. We also recommend nearby Car parking for disabled people on our website e.g., for His Majesty’s Theatre: Bon Accord Harriet Street car park Denburn car park and Chapel Street Lower Denburn, Denburn car park Union Terrace Outside Aberdeen Art Gallery on Schoolhill There is also a drop-off point in front of the theatre.
- We have accessible toilets on all levels. Our customers can request seats near our disabled access toilets when booking through our Box Office. The team are briefed and experienced in supporting with these requests.
- We do offer a water bowl at all three venues. There is a grassy area at the back of His Majesty’s Theatre. The Lemon Tree and The Music Hall do not have grassy areas nearby.
- We provide one free Essential Companion ticket for those who need someone to be with them to come to an event.
- Our Audio Described performances are suitable for those who are visually impaired or blind. A description of the set and costumes is combined with a commentary on the action to bring the show to life. Audio Described performances tend to take place on Saturday matinee performances at His Majesty’s Theatre. You will need an infrared headset to make use of this service; please let the box office know at point of booking if you require a headset. We offer Touch Tours, for those who are visually impaired can experience being on the stage and feel components of the show such as the set, props, and costumes. It can help to build a picture of the play while listening to the Audio Description. Touch Tours usually take place one hour prior to most Audio Described performances and are ticketed and free of charge. We also usually have dedicated staff on Audio Described performances to attend to any groups/customers who are using the headsets, Audio Described aspect and Touch Tours."
- We offer BSL Interpreted Performances. Our interpreter will stand in a visible position and interpret the spoken elements of a performance using British Sign Language. You can book through the box office. We also offer Captioned Performances which are suitable for those who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing. The actor’s words appear on a display unit (or screens) on or near the stage at the same time as they are spoken or sung – just like television subtitling. Speaker names, sound effects and offstage noises are also shown. Captioning units are positioned on the stage front (one either side of the stage), offering the best view of the subtitles around the theatre. They can be seen from every seat in the house, allowing you to watch the action on stage and read the subtitles at the same time. Infrared Hearing System - This system works by projecting a signal in to the auditorium, which is then picked up by a receiver (this should be facing outwards on the headset or neck loop). Headsets can be collected from our Front of House team before the start of the show, and they can help you get the system set up and adjusted to your requirements. Sennheiser Mobile Connect - MobileConnect is a Wi-Fi based system that enables audio to be streamed in real time to a smartphone or tablet. You can use your own smartphone or tablet and headphones to connect. We have a limited number of smartphones which can be borrowed. Our customers can download the Sennheiser MobileConnect app before the start of a performance. Connect to the system as if connecting to a local Wi-Fi point, select the audio, connect to headphones or neck loop (if a hearing aid user) and adjust the volume as required."
- We also offer a Relaxed Performance for our Pantomime at HMT. A specially adapted version of the show, modified for those who would benefit from a more relaxed environment. It is particularly helpful for those with an autism spectrum condition or learning difficulty, or anyone who has a general anxiety around coming to an unfamiliar place. Everyone is welcome at a Relaxed Performance. What to expect during a relaxed performance – The auditorium doors are left open The audience is free to come and go as they please during the performance A quiet area is provided away from the performance if it is needed The house lights won’t be lowered to the same degree Strobe lighting is at a minimum, if at all Music is played more quietly with fewer loud or sudden sound effects."
