Access guidance
- Our venue has a range of seating available across all floor levels (level 1 – 4) and both Hurst and Thorp Street entrances, from padded bench-style seats to sofas and armchairs offering a variety of options for anyone visiting. For your ease, we also provide an interval order service for most Main House performances, accessible over all floors, that allows you to order drinks, snacks and more from our bar or café direct to a nearby kiosk of your choice – a great option for avoiding queues! If you would like a table closer to the entrance in either The Proscenium Lounge or The Circle Lounge, this can be requested at the time of booking. Please note that some of the seats in both The Proscenium and The Circle Lounge don’t have armrests, but they can be requested when you book. Interval orders can be placed for drinks, snacks and ice creams at any of our bars or kiosks for most main house performances. These are then available to collect from a designated collection point on each foyer level (Levels 1-4) to avoid the need to queue in the interval. If you are a wheelchair user, we also have a wheelchair lounge ordering service available at most performances though we would recommend contacting us ahead of your visit to make sure that it’s running when you attend. Alongside this, we also have Visitor Experience team members and Volunteers available to advise customers of those bars that attract the shortest queues, and direct customers to the most accessible or shortest routes around the venue. If at any point during your visit you need support while you are queuing, please feel free to reach out to a member of our Visitor Services team members who will be happy to support you.
- Limited disabled parking is available on Hurst Street and Thorp Street. The Arcadian Centre Car Park has specially allocated bays with easy access to street level and only about 150 yds to our entrance. To gain entry to the theatre (Main Entrance, Hurst St), there are automatic doors with a push button on the right, leading to either 6 steps or a ramp into the main foyer area. Lifts are available for wheelchair users to all levels 1-4. Wheelchair positions both in our main auditorium and Patrick Studio – which can be booked via the website by registering on our access registration scheme, by calling us or in person at the box office (please note box office is open 1.5 hours prior to a performance and 30 minutes after it starts). We have accessible all gender and ambulant disabled toilets on all levels 1-4. 3x wheelchair accessible toilets in stalls (L1), 1x front circle (L2), 2x Middle Circle (L3), 1x Upper Circle (L4), and there are also two wheelchair accessible toilets with grab rails. We don’t currently have a toilet space with hoist or changing spaces, with the closest space providing these services being Grand Central, in New Street Station, which is a 10-minute walk away from Birmingham Hippodrome. All bars, kiosks, The Coffee Bar, The Proscenium Lounge and The Circle Lounge feature low-level counter service and are wheelchair accessible via lifts. The Proscenium Lounge is wheelchair accessible with double doors to provide access and none of the chairs or tables are permanently fixed. The Circle Lounge is wheelchair accessible. Please note that we do have some higher poseur tables and some tables with fixed banquette style seating, so please do mention at the time of booking if you require a lower-level table or movable seat. A limited number of wheelchairs are available to borrow during your visit (pre-book via the Ticket Sales team).
- Here are some of the distances you may need to walk: • Front door to lifts – 40 paces • Lifts to furthest auditorium door – 42 paces • Lifts to MCL access spaces – 42 paces • Lifts to Stall left lounge (furthest lounge) – 30 paces • Furthest auditorium doors to toilets – 51 paces
- All toilets are located on the right-hand side of the building so if you require urgent toilet access it's best to book aisle seats closest to the auditorium entrances on auditorium right (low seat numbers) as these are closest to the toilets. If you need urgent access to a toilet during your visit, please reach out to one of our Visitor Experience team members who will be happy to help.
- Assistance dogs are welcome to attend alongside you and enter the auditorium. However, as some performances have special effects and we know that not all dogs will enjoy the performance, you are also welcome to leave them with our trained Visitor Experience team members who will look after and toilet your dog, though this will need to be registered in advance. For those who need it, we also have wheelchair lounges, which can be comfortable for dogs needing a little more room to stretch out and enjoy the show!
- Yes! We offer 2-for-1 for disabled theatregoers who may require the support of a companion during their visit. If you’ll be attending with more than one companion or carer, please give us a call before your visit and we will try our best to accommodate.
- Captioning, similar to subtitles is a system that shows not only the actors’ words, spoken and sung, but also includes any speaker names, sounds effects and off-stage noises that may be happening.
- We have an Access Assistance Point located just as you enter through our main, Hurst Street Entrance where you can collect any accessibility items you may need, as well as being a great place to go with queries that you may have during your visit. As well as this, we also have a British Sign Language (BSL) video behind the Box Office counter which displays key information about your visit. Access Point Items: - Access to Convo – giving you access to a BSL Interpreter by scanning a QR (provided at the counter) or the app on venue tablets - Auri System receivers (works with Auracast) - Scribble Pad to communicate with team members - Lanyard for use during your visit* - Pre-booked wheelchairs - Ear Defenders - Fidget toys - Colour therapy glasses If you have any questions or queries, please feel free to approach one of our Visitor Experience team members who will be happy to help. *Useful for those who would like to identify to Visitor Experience team members that they have an invisible disability and may need extra support during their visit.
