Bodmin Jail
Overview
Bodmin Jail is a historic former prison situated in Bodmin, on the edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Built in 1779 and closed in 1927, a large range of buildings fell into ruin, but parts of the prison have been turned into a tourist attraction, and more recently another large part was converted into a hotel.

Access guidance
- Visitors first enter the new building, where they are guided down a staircase to the lowest level of the attraction. A platform lift provides alternative access. The route through the new ‘Dark Walk’ attraction is level. When visitors reach the original jail building, they are taken up a level, accessed by stairs or a platform lift. On the other side of the original jail wing, visitors move outside across a ramp, sheltered by a glazed canopy before entering another building. The next part of the attraction carries on up slopes through the building and out onto a resin-bound gravel ramp. There are zig-zag bends leading up the slope to the former stables area. This area has large stone slabs, but is otherwise level.
- One accessible WC is available in the Naval Wing level after the main AV area.
- Assistance dogs are, of course, welcome throughout the entire site.
- At Bodmin Jail Museum we welcome all visitors and are committed to making our events and experiences as accessible as possible. Free Carer Tickets - A free carer ticket is available for one person accompanying a disabled visitor who requires additional support during their visit.
