Northampton Filmhouse
Overview
The Northampton Filmhouse was developed by the team at Royal & Derngate Northampton; one of the UK’s most acclaimed regional theatres. The first screen, situated adjacent to the theatre, opened on 20 June 2013. A second screen was opened in April 2017, built alongside the existing cinema, making even more screenings available of the very best in world, independent, British and mainstream films, along with live screenings of theatre, ballet and opera events from around the world. Between the two screens is a raised outdoor terrace and seating area, where customers can enjoy some carefully selected local refreshments.

Access guidance
- We aim to welcome, assist and serve everyone as quickly, comfortably, and safely as possible. While we do our best to minimise waiting times, there are a few moments during your visit where standing or queuing may be required. Arrival - You may be asked to queue briefly for security bag checks and ticket scanning. Having your tickets ready and bringing minimal items where possible can help make this process quicker. Facilities – At busier times, queues may form for bar service, ice cream trays, toilets, and the cloakroom. Getting to Your Seat – Our ushers will check tickets and guide you to your seat, which may involve a short wait at the auditorium entrance. Exiting– When the performance ends, you may experience short queues as audiences leave the building all together.
- If you find standing difficult, there are several ways we aim to support you during your visit. Seating is available throughout our foyers, with chairs and tables in the bar areas, as well as benches at our entrances and nearby Accessible Toilet facilities. Our Access Hosts are on hand to help and can assist you by going to the bar on your behalf, or by offering support if you need to wait in a quieter or more comfortable space. Please speak to the team on arrival if you need support.
- A Sensory Space is made available for relaxed performances and family-focussed shows. This is a quiet space where you can take a break from the show or busy foyer and relax. Our sensory space has a lay-down pod, floor cushions, colouring and puzzles. You can also borrow a Sensory Bag from our Access Hosts, these include fidget toys, ear defenders, sunglasses and communication cards.
- The Northampton Filmhouse’s two screens are housed in two separate buildings. The entrances to the foyers of both are located via a walkway that leads off of Derngate. There is level access across this walkway, the foyer spaces, the bars and the auditoria. Customers enter both screens from the rear, with wheelchair spaces set on the back row. There is a handrail for the wide steps down into the screen.
- From the entrance on Derngate to your seats is approximate 40m
- There is level access to an adapted toilet just inside the Royal & Derngate entrance next to the Filmhouse, and Ladies and Gents toilets down a number of stairs inside the foyer. The adapted toilet requires a RADAR key to use - please speak to our Filmhouse staff if you do not have your own.
- We welcome all Assistance Dogs and water can be provided. We also offer free “doggy” ice cream for all service dogs visiting the theatre for a performance. If you wish to take your dog into the auditorium, please let Box Office know when booking so that suitable seats are assigned to you. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate Emotional Support Animals/Dogs. For more information about our policy, please contact our Box Office.
- We offer regular captioned screenings, with descriptive English language subtitles providing additional auditory information for the deaf and hard of hearing
- Dementia-Friendly Screenings Our Dementia-Friendly screenings offer people living with dementia the chance to enjoy a classic film in a relaxed and supportive environment. There are no adverts or trailers before the film but our cinema bar is open 45 minutes prior to the film, serving drinks and snacks. Tickets to Dementia-Friendly screenings are the standard price, with one free companion ticket available for those living with dementia. Relaxed Screenings These screenings incorporate subtle changes, including having the ‘lights up’ and ‘sound down’, to keep the experience as relaxed and stress-free as possible. We won’t be showing trailers or adverts before the film, and people are free to move around during the film and to make some noise.
