Top Tips from the team here at the Access Card regarding fireworks and safety at this time of year.

Hi Everyone, Craig here from the Access Card team, with some top tips to ensure you have a great bonfire night and festive period.

Be safe with Fireworks:  We want you, your family and friends to have a fun and safe time on Bonfire Night, with this time of year it is tempting to have fireworks at home, if so, please make sure they are kept in a safe locked box where children cannot access them, make sure a responsible person is in charge of the display and wearing fire safe clothing and always make sure to buy your fireworks from specialist retailers who can best advise to their use and storage, don’t be tempted to buy from cheap sellers or overseas, with bonfires be careful around open flames and don’t add any flammable liquids to start the fire.

Stay Warm: With the winter cold creeping in, this time of year can be extremely difficult for those affected by the drop in temperature, for those with any physical disability,  make sure to keep those wheat bags on standby, keep your thermostat set to an ideal temperature between 20-23C and make sure to wear extra layers and thermals when outside and chuck that big thick duvet on your bedspread to make sure you are extra cosy and warm over the winter.

Stay Safe: Those dark nights are here and unfortunately it means an increase in crime, so make sure to check all windows and doors when out enjoying the fireworks at this time of year, also make sure to be more vigilant around places you are unsure of and be careful when out in dimly lit areas, keep all personal belongings in a pocket that is easily hidden and make sure to keep your phone battery at a good level in case of an emergency.

Keep pets Safe: Over bonfire night and new year, be sure to keep all pets inside, loud bangs and lights can scare animals, so for those with assistance animals also, make sure to make them aware of the noise, if possible use additional thunder vests to help calm your dog, cats also need to be catered for however if you have a cat flap and they manage to escape, be sure to check under cars, outhouses and sheds for them if they get startled by the noise.

Keep in touch: We all appreciate how the winter can affect those with a disability and at this time of year especially it’s important to make sure you can easily keep in touch with friends, family and loved ones but more importantly to keep up to date with prescriptions and flu jabs, check to make sure you have medication and emergency contacts up to date.

Be sure to keep in contact with friends or family who are living with a disability, especially those living with respiratory disabilities due to the weather, our team here want you all to have a great bonfire night and festive period and we hope our top tips will help you all have a great end to the year!

See you all in December with our festive update!
